A “must see” film that is Extremely well made and Incredibly moving

“Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” is a wonderful movie experience. It’s a showcase of great acting, especially and incredibly from Thomas Horn as 11-year-old Oskar Schell (in his first film role, plucked by direction Stephen Daldry from Horn’s appearance on TV’s Jeopardy). How this young actor isn’t getting up for major acting awards this season is criminal.

Based on Jonathan Safran Foer’s 2005 novel, the story unfolds in the aftermath of 9/11 as Oskar deals with the death of his Father in the World Trade Center. As his parents in supporting roles, Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock are seamless. As Oskar discovers a key in his Father’s possessions, he begins a journey to find what it unlocks, encountering along the way many people and sharing part of his journey with an elderly gentleman living across the street from him, played by Max von Sydow, with never speaks yet conveys so much as their relationship unfolds.

Director Daldry is accustomed to tackling difficult subjects for the screen, with previous works “Billy Elliott” and “The Reader” as well as one of the LGBT community’s favorites, “The Hours.” With this film, he captures all of Oskar’s fears, confusions, frustrations and uncertainty. As Oskar searches with his key, his intelligence, quirks and oddities create a wonderful character the audience feels for every step of the way.

Without giving away too much, be prepared to weep, regardless of your gender or toughness. And it’s not weeping from saccharine scenes, but rather family bonds and emotions we all relate to. Especially strong are scenes with Jeffrey Wright and Horn, as well as Horn and Bullock towards the film’s conclusion.

“Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” is about one boy’s loss and his coping. It is time well spent in the movie theatre that will remain with the moviegoer long after.
